Messengers Of God

Baha’is believe that all the Messengers Of God brought a special message from God which told people of the time how God wanted them to live. Some of these Messengers lived a very long time ago. Here are the Messengers we know about:

Messengers Of God

Abraham: Abraham tought that there was one God. He was sent away from His country because of what He taught.

Moses: Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, and gave them laws for their new life. The most famous ones are called the Ten Commandments. His followers are known as Jews, and their history and teachings can be found in the Torah.

Krishna: In the holy books of Hindus, Kirshna teaches us that God appears to mankind in every age. He also taught that we should respect every living thing.

Zoroaster: Zoroaster lives in Persia, Where the king used Zoroaster’s teachings about good and evil to make his empire a better place to live. His followers are called Zoroastrians, and their holy book is called the Avesta.

Buddha: The Buddha, the Enlighted One , was an Indian prince who gave up all His possessions to teach people right living and right thinking. His followers are called Buddhists

Jesus: Jesus taught the message of love and forgiveness, but the leaders of the time did not like what He said and had Him crucified. Those who believe in Him are called Christians.

Muhammad: Muhammad told the people of Arabia about God, Jesus and about the laws of Moses. He gave them new laws and teachings for His time, and you can read about them in the book called the Qu’ran.

The Bab: The Bab lived in Persia, and He gave His followers new teachings and told them to prepare for the Promised One, a great teacher who would unite all the peoples of the world.

Baha’u'llah: Baha’u'llah brought new teachings for our time. He taught that we must live together in peace and unity.

There have also been other Messengers in parts of the world that had no writing and they have not left us books.

Father of The Poor

Everyone was always welcome in the house of Baha’u'llah and His wife Navvab, and no one was ever turned away. The people called Navvab “Mother of Consolation” and Baha’u'llah was known as “Father of the Poor” , Sometimes people came to them bacause they were ill or had sore eyes. Navvab would give them ointment or other medicine to make them better.

Sometimes people came who were hungrey or poor, then Baha’u'llah would give them food and money to help them.

Sometimes they were worried or lonely or sad, and Baha’u'llah would love them as though they were members of His own family.

Once, when someone asked what work Baha’u'llah did, he was told that Baha’u'llah cheered the sad and fed the hungrey. And, when asked what important job or special title Baha’u'llah had, the person answered,” He has none, apart from befriending the poor and the stranger.”

The Delightful Garden

It was still dark when Baha’is gathered outside the Mansion of Bahji early one morning. They had been so excited that they had hardly slept all night for they were going to spend the day with Baha’u'llah at a picinc in the Junaynih Garden.

A ray of sunlight shone apon the the large, blue, wooden door. The friends waited and watched the door swung open and Baha’u'llah came, smiling, out of the mansion.

One of the Baha’is hurried forward with a fine white donkey for Baha’u'llah to ride. The donkey’s name was Thunder but really he was very quiet and gentle. He held his head high and carried Baha’u'llah across the gate, past the bushes were the birds were singing.

One of the friends walked beside Baha’u'llah holding a large umbrella to shade Him from the sun as He slowly rode along. Everyone else followed behind. They made their way beneath trees and through the fields until they came to the beautiful Junaynih Garden.

When they arrived Baha’u'llah started to chant prayers and the Love of God overflowed to fill the whole of the garden. It made the friends become free and happy.

Baha’u'llah was also very happy but He wished that Abdu’lBaha could be there to enjoy the picnic with them. But Abdu’lBaha had to meet with some town officials so that the friends could live in peace, protected and well looked after.

Later when they had eaten their lunch, Baha’u'llah looked across the distant fields and saw Abdu’lBaha walking towards the garden.

Abdu’lBaha humbly entered the presence of Baha’u'llah and Baha’u'llah loving welcomed him.

The kiss

One day Baha’u'llah was walking along te street in the town of Baghdad. As He walked, His long robes flowed behind him. People of would stare and wonder what was it that made them so happy. It was as if the King of Kings had passed by.

Baha’u'llah walked along the crowded paths and passed the little shops and houses. Finally, He came to a bridge acroos a river. Near the bridge lived a very poor and bent old woman. The old woman knew tha every day Baha’u'llah would pass that way, and she was standing, waiting in the roadway.

Baha’u'llah was very pleased to see her. He always gave her food and money so that she was not hungrey. When Baha’u'llah left Baghdad He made sure that for the rest of her life she was properly looked after. He stopped and smiled and bent down low towards her. His eyes were full of love and tender understanding.

She lifted up her face and very gently kissed Him on the cheek.

Dreams

When Baha’u'llah was a child, He was not like other children. Although He did not go to school He knew things. He would explain to wise men the hardest parts of the holy writing. They were suprised at his clever and clear answers.

When Baha’u'llah was 5 years old, He had a dream, He dreamed that He was in a garden and there were huge birds flying over Him. From all sides they started to attack Him. These attacks did not hurt Him or frighten him. Then He found Himself swimming in the sea being attacked by fishes they too did not hurt or frighten Him.

Baha’u'llah’s father also had a dream, He dreamed that Baha’u'llah was swimming in the sea, rays of light came out of Him. The light attracted fishes of all size . Each fish held a strand of His hair . Where ever Baha’u'llah swam the fishes would follow.

When a wise man asked the meaning of this dream, He said that the sea was the world and the fishes were like the people. He said that the nations of the world would be attracted by the light of Baha’u'llah. Some would attack like the birds and fishes but non would stop Him doing what God had asked Him to do.

The Most Great Exchange

Miraza Mihdi though understood that his Father’s hands is the Manifestation of God

Baha’u'llah asked His son,”Aqa, what do you wish?

He asked for a gift, an exchange. He said,” I wish the people of Baha to be able to attain your presence.

Once more Baha’u'llah had to put away his father’s grief. He had to put away His wish to keep His beautiful boy by His side. Once more, He had to let His son go. He also had to counsel Abdul-Baha, Who knelt beside Him. Tears streamed from His eyes. He begged Bahaullah to save His brother’s life. “O my Greatest Branch,” He said, “leave him in the hands of God.”

Bahaullah dismissed the others and remained alone with His dying son. He gave him His answer: “And so it shall be. God will grant your wish.” Later, He said to God: “Glorified art Thou, O Lord, My God! Thou seest … My son blood stained before Thy face … I have, O my Lord, offered up that which Thou hast given me, that Thy servants may be quickened and all that dwell on earth be united.”

Twenty-two hours after his fall, the spirit of the Purest Branch slipped out of his human temple. It was 23 June 1870.

“Mihdi! O Mihdi!” cried Bahaullah. He had granted the plea of His martyr-son to exchange his life for the opening of the gates. The travelers, the pilgrims, would surely come now. But His beloved boy was gone.

Later, the broken body of the Purest Branch was lovingly cleansed and prepared for burial. AbdulBaha stood guard, weeping as if His heart would break. He and His helpers laid His beloved brother to rest beyond the prison walls next to a small shrine. Even the fortress guards who escorted them were watchful and quiet.

Eventually AbdulBaha and His companions turned, grieving and weary from their awful task. It was then that the ground began to quiver and shake. They watched and waited. In a few minutes, the restless stir and rumble quieted. All was still again. They continued on their way.

Later, Bahaullah said of Mirza Mihdi: “When thou wast laid to rest in the earth, the earth itsef trembled in its longing to meet thee. … Thou art the trust of God and His treasure in this Land. Erelong will God reveal through thee that which He had desired.”

Surely, they also heard the story of the young man who made it possible for them to be there. Surely, they visited his resting place by the city gate. How could they fail to say prayers for the progress of his soul and thank him in their hearts for his great gift?

Today, pilgrims pay their respects at his beautiful monument on Mount Carmel. It was placed there by his kinsman, Shoghi Effendi, the Guardian, the great grandson of the Ancient Beauty, in loving tribute to one who freely gave his life to ensure the happiness of others.

The Most Great Exchange

may171.jpg

In many months since Baha’ullah had been exiled to Palestine, many of his followers had tired to enter the city to visit Him

Mirza Mihdi was the younger brother of Abdul’l-baha. Baha’u'llah called him his Purest Branch. Mirza Mihdi grieved continuously over the lover of baha’u'llah who traveled a hundreds of miles to see their beloved in Akka. Always they were forced to leave without the glimpse of him. He knew how they felt. Tiny and frail, he had been left with his grandmother in Tehran 20 years ago. The rest of the family was exiled to Baghdad in the middle of winter. Seven years later, he was finally able to join them. He knew what joy those who might get their wish to pass beyond the gates of Akka. There they might enter he presence of the Ancient Beauty.

In Akka in 1870, Mirza Mihdi was 22 years old. For some time he had been able to fulfill his heart’s desire: to serve his father, his family, and his fellow exiles. He sat with them at their gatherings and read them their father’s words. From him they learned courtesy and patience, dignity and joyful submission to the will of God. Always in his thoughts were the unlucky ones at the gate.

One hot evening, Mirza Mihdi was feeling unwell. His beloved father suggested   that he go to the rooftop of the prison barracks and walk as often as he did. There he could be breath deeply in the fresh salty air. He could listen to the gentle sweep of the cool waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Alone and quiet he would say his prayers in peace.

There was a open, unguarded skylight in that rooftop. He always counted his steps in the dark so he wouldn’t fall through the opening. He knew when to stop and turn, But this night, he made a mistake. He miscounted. He stepped into the space and fell in the room below. At the end of his horrible flight, he crashed onto a jagged wooden crate.

The noise and the horror of his fall brought those near by racing from their rooms. Kneeling over him, they tore of the cloths of his chest. They saw jagged points of wood sticking through his body. Blood poured from his wounds.

The Italian physician who attended the exiles did what he could to the terrible injury. But it was beyond the help of human hands.
